Line of Duty determinations decide whether a Soldier’s illness or injury happened while on duty and, if so, whether it is considered service-connected. This directly determines eligibility for disability benefits, since those benefits are paid for conditions deemed to be in the line of duty and connected to military service. When the injury is confirmed as in the line of duty, the Soldier can qualify for disability compensation or medical retirement based on the severity and impact of the condition. If the determination finds the injury wasn’t in the line of duty, disability benefits may be denied or limited, which is why these determinations are a high priority.

Promotions, housing allowances, and retirement age hinge on other factors—rank, time in service, dependency status, and statutory retirement rules—not on whether an injury occurred in the line of duty—so they’re not directly affected by the LOD outcome.
